The Power of Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments
Chemical peels and laser treatments are advanced, minimally invasive, rejuvenating skincare procedures that reveal fresh, youthful, healthy skin. The power of these treatments is quite something when you consider the many skin concerns they address, including hard-to-treat acne and melasma.
What is Melasma and How Does it Come About?
While it’s not a dangerous condition, Melasma is a highly visible skin pigmentation concern in which brown or gray patches appear over the face. Occurring 90% of the time with women, melasma often appears during pregnancy, which is how it earned the nickname, the “mask of pregnancy.” However, men can also experience melasma.
Aside from pregnancy, melasma can be caused by sun exposure, problems with the liver, certain medications (including hormone treatments and birth control pills), some types of waxing products, and certain products that include artificial fragrances.
Acne–How Does it Start?
Acne begins with the oil glands under the skin that are attached to hair follicles. When dead skin cells, toxins, or other debris clog the pores, bacteria begin to form. The oil glands become inflamed, and the natural expression of oils is slowed, which creates a comfortable habitat for further bacterial growth. The result? Acne.
Acne can be triggered by a number of other factors, such as stress, a poor diet, hormonal changes, or certain medications.
How Common are Melasma and Acne?
Up to 33% of the population gets melasma. While anyone can experience melasma, people with darker skin tones are typically more prone to melasma.
Acne is extremely common, affecting approximately 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24. Acne can range from mild to severe.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are a highly effective, proven treatment for melasma. Peels remove the top layer of skin, taking away the melasma and replacing it with fresh, glowing skin. When it comes to treating acne, the fact that peels use a mild acid formula to remove toxins, damaged skin, dead skin cells, oils and bacteria is why this treatment is so effective. A peel penetrates beneath the top layer of the skin to unclog the pores and allow the body to rid itself of acne-causing bacteria. A chemical peel smooths skin texture, including acne scars, resolves pigmentation concerns like melasma, and leaves behind a renewed, healthy layer of skin.
Laser Treatments
Laser treatments pass a beam of light over the top layers of the skin, which destroys and breaks up the pigmentation of melasma and acne scar tissue. The energy of the laser penetrates under the skin to boost the production of collagen, which improves skin texture by causing new, healthy skin cells to grow. The laser energy reaches deep into the skin to kill harmful, acne-causing bacteria and to reduce oil secretion, which improves current acne and helps prevent future acne outbreaks.
